Commemorating Taiwan's restoration reflects Chinese people's shared will
The decision made by China's national legislature to designate Oct 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration reflects the collective will of the Chinese people, including compatriots in Taiwan, a mainland spokesperson said on Friday.
The decision was adopted during the five-day session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress, the country's top legislative body, which opened on Friday in Beijing.
Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said, "The decision demonstrates the firm resolve of the Communist Party of China to safeguard national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as well as to resolve the Taiwan question and achieve the complete reunification of the motherland."
He noted that the decision was made in response to public opinion on the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China, which is an important outcome of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931–45).
"It will undoubtedly inspire Chinese people at home and abroad to remember history, safeguard achievements, uphold peace, and work together to build the future," he said, adding that it will also help carry forward the patriotic tradition and the spirit of the War of Resistance.
Chen emphasized that establishing the commemoration day also resolutely opposes "Taiwan independence" separatism and external interference, and strengthens commitment to protecting the shared homeland of the Chinese nation.
"We will unite with our fellow compatriots in Taiwan to remember history, honor the martyrs, work together to advance the great cause of national reunification, and create a bright future for national rejuvenation," Chen said, noting that commemorative activities in various forms will be held nationwide.
