Turning straw to smog
Drivers in Hefei, capital city of East China's Anhui Province, turn on their
headlights on Tuesday afternoon for fear of accidents as they drive through smog
caused by the burning of crop straw by local farmers. The suburban farmers were
burning leftover rape straw and wheat straw in nearby fields to enrich the
cultivated land, despite warnings by experts that the smog is extremely
dangerous to regional aircraft landing and expressway traffic. (Insert) A farmer
laughs while seeing blazes rage through his leftover straw.
