Mock trial promotes women's rights

"He keeps a mistress and often beats you. You must make up your mind to
divorce him." Applause broke out as Zhou Yongshuang wrapped up her testimony at
a mock trial held at Haizhu Square on Sunday afternoon.
The event marked the first street performance put on by the Yuexiu District
Women's Federation to advocate legal protections for women.
"The response was better than we expected," said Zhou, deputy director of the
federation.
Hundreds turned out to watch the mock trial, enacted by actual court
officials and lawyers as well as women's federation staff members.
The women's organization dealt with more than 180 court cases in the first
half of this year, mainly involving marriage problems, domestic violence and
financial difficulties.
