Zhang Yadong, one of the most iconic producers in the Chinese music industry, has been appointed Chief Music Adviser at Universal Music China, a division of Universal Music Group.

Widely recognized as a visionary whose work has defined the sound of Mandarin pop for more than three decades, Zhang has consistently pushed the boundaries of music production with his forward-looking creative approach.

His appointment represents a significant step in advancing producer-led innovation and strengthening long-term artist development in China's music scene. By leveraging Universal Music Group's global creative community and distribution infrastructure, Zhang will help introduce the next generation of Chinese artists to international audiences.

"Zhang Yadong is not only a pioneering figure in Chinese music, but also a dedicated mentor to emerging talent across China's music industry. His appointment underscores our long-term commitment to the development of Chinese music and will further accelerate our efforts to discover and nurture the next generation of artists," says Timothy Xu, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Greater China.

Having previously worked closely with Zhang during his tenure at EMI, Xu adds: "Zhang Yadong has established a distinctive musical vision and creative methodology that I regard as an invaluable asset to the industry. Over the years, he has consistently introduced me to outstanding young musicians and created opportunities for them through a variety of platforms."

Zhang says: "I'm deeply honored to join Universal Music China. Xu and I have collaborated for many years, whether as a colleague or a longtime friend, he has always been supportive and encouraging.

"Building talent requires patience, foresight, and commitment, and I hope that together we can create a platform that offers young Chinese artists the tools, resources, and opportunities to grow — and to share their voices with audiences worldwide."

Over the course of his decades-long career, Zhang has been the creative force behind many of the most defining works in Mandarin pop scene. His long-standing collaboration with Faye Wong, the reigning diva of Chinese pop, produced a series of landmark albums that elevated her to cultural icon status. He also produced influential works for singer-songwriters, such as Pu Shu, Karen Mok and Xu Wei.
