The transition from the 19th century to the 20th saw the rise of several artists’ groups, such as the Lingnan (Canton) School, founded by ink painters active in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and neighboring areas.

Their artworks revolutionized classic Chinese painting styles, embraced a modern touch, and capitalized on the cultural accumulations of Guangdong and its openness as a trade center that linked China to the rest of the world.

That revolutionary spirit motivated the following generations of artists to paint with brushes and ink.

Retrospect, an ongoing exhibition at the China National Academy of Painting, focuses on the Guangzhou Academy Painting’s dedication to cultivating and carrying on the heritage of the Lingnan School since its founding in 1982.

The last time it held a group exhibition in Beijing was about 20 years ago. Retrospect will run until Monday.
